Crisis-hit Premiership sides ask fans not to request ticket refunds
A number of Gallagher Premiership sides are asking fans to help them through rugby’s financial crisis by not seeking refunds for their unused tickets for the 2019-20 season. Leicester – should matches be cancelled, moved behind closed doors or moved to a different venue – want to put the money owed to ticket-holders into their rugby programme, where it will help fund player recruitment and retention under incoming head coach Steve Borthwick. Gloucester ticket-holders have been told they would be making “a huge contribution to the future success of the club, if fans were in a position to not request a refund”. Wasps fans were urged: “Donate this amount [the cost of tickets], or a proportion of it, back to the club to support Wasps through this very challenging time.” Leicester’s plea coincided with the news that their head of medical services, Ed Hollis, will be leaving by mutual consent due to financial pressures on the club. Leicester are also offering fans a credit option will allow them to use the money owed for hospitality purposes or in the club shop. A Leicester statement said: “If you choose to donate, your investment will remain with the club and be used to support the rugby programme, including recruitment and retention of the playing squad under Geordan Murphy and new head coach Steve Borthwick, and in resourcing the successful academy set-up.”
